The Role

To achieve all KPI’s for the assigned merchandise department, through an understanding of the Kmart customer, relevant trends in shopping behaviour and development of relevant and timely merchandise plans and range plans within the scope of the Kmart strategy.

Key Responsibilities

Timeliness

  • Critical Path management with the Buyer that is relevant to the categories being managed
  • Timely delivery of Forecasts and Plans that meet timelines for the business unit

Meet and exceed KPIs

  • Ability to create Plans that meet and exceed KPIs (Sales, Calc Income, Inventory KPIs such as stockturn and/or availability)
  • Remain dissatisfied with status quo and look for innovative ways to improve financial outcomes
  • Look for learnings to continually improve the result through incisive in season analysis and post seasonal analysis

Risk management

  • Detailed understanding of customer and product lifecycles
  • Actively plan and manages range to deliver financial outcomes
  • Assesses risk vs reward to deliver best outcome
  • Being bold as well as having the ability to manage the downside
  • Remaining objective and fact-based

Problem solving

  • Understanding and identifying roadblocks
  • Seeking out a path to resolving them or evaluating solutions and impacts to business
  • Addressing roadblocks through analysis and engagement and collaboration with stakeholders

Driving results

  • Assess actions and timeframes required to deliver goals
  • Determine best path to deliver an outcome
  • Understand that speed in decision-making and change will improve the outcome and to plan for it accordingly

Interpreting data and trends

  • Delve deep into data to understand customer patterns and trends (in-season and post-season)
  • Develop learnings from trends and attribute analysis
  • Understand competition, market trends, and both the retail environment and other factors impacting customer spending and emerging changes

Engage with customer-facing and analytics teams

  • Engage with and utilise information from Design, Marketing, Customer Insights, On-Line, KAS/Suppliers, Stores and the Demand team to identify emerging trends
  • Accept feedback and remain objective
  • Understand the emergence of trends and be able to drive change in the assortment and approach to the category

 

Execution and action

 

  • Track the progress of new product, seasonal programs and trials to maximise opportunities
  • Be the advocate for changes to processes and approaches based on observations and analysis
  • Apply learnings to constantly improve the customer experience
  • Engage the right people to deliver an improved customer experience

About You

Work Experience:

  • Experience in Merchandise Planning, forecasting and managing a range plan from a retail environment (essential)
  • Previous people management experience (desirable)

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities/Technology Used:

  • Strong commercial acumen and numerical skills, high levels of attention to detail.
  • Ability to observe, interpret and act upon trends in customer behaviour.
  • Highly inquisitive, self-driven with strong organisation skills.
  • Ability to develop accurate financial plans, assortment plans that are relevant to the customer and deliver financial outcomes.
  • Quantification of individual products over time.
  • Ability to articulate observations, reasons for actions taken and high levels of persuasiveness.
  • Proficient with business intelligence tools, Excel, Word and Outlook.

Preferred Formal Education/Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Finance, Business, Commerce or Retail related degree
