What we’re looking for?

A unique opportunity has arisen for motivated and results orientated individuals to join Kmart Group (representing both Kmart Australia and Target Australia) in the role of Indigenous Affairs Advisor within the Corporate Affairs and Sustainability function.

Reporting in to the Head of Community we have available a Melbourne based role to work closely with Indigenous communities, organisations, businesses and our teams. The role will continue to build on awareness and understanding of culture and ensuring that our commitments to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people stay strong within the Group.

About You

To ensure the success of this initiative we are looking to complete our team, the key responsibilities of the role will include

  • Working with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, stakeholders and our key partners to proactively support Indigenous organisations and connect our teams within local communities to create trust for our brands as culturally safe within communities.
  • To celebrate and raise awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through effective communication within our businesses; utilising our communication channels, this can include store openings and events.
  • Advise and help manage customer contacts when culturally sensitive situations arise.
  • To be passionate about being part of the Group’s community team and drive programs (including managing donations) that support our broader sustainability development program.

 

  • To maintain and grow opportunities for supplier diversity within our businesses and advise the team (where relevant) on appropriate practices and policies that advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and culture.  
  • To support and implement Kmart Group’s commitment to the Wesfarmers Employment Parity Initiative (EPI) and Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) initiatives as that includes employment, supplier diversity and community relations.

To be successful in this role, you will ideally possess the following skills and experience;

  • Experience in liaising, negotiating and consulting with Indigenous communities
  • Experience in a fast-paced multi-functional team
  • Experience in managing multiple projects at a time and gearing toward process driven way of dealing with tasks; strong attention to detail and time management capabilities is a must
  • An interest in social issues and advocacy, engaging people in learning more about social topics (advocate)
  • Qualifications in Public Relations, Corporate Affairs, Community Investment/Projects, Sustainability, Communications and/or not for profit organisations is ideal but not essential
  • An ability to build rapport, motivate, positively influence others and be comfortable presenting about cultural topics.
  • Proven experience in communicating programs including running events that drive education and understanding about diversity.
  • Those with communications, public affairs or community experience in large organisations would be considered highly desirable

The successful applicant must have the right to work in Australia, a current Driver’s License and a Working with Children Check (or will be required to undergo one).
