The role

The People and Capability Business Partner supports two Zone Managers who between them lead 30+ Kmart stores with each store having 6 Managers and an average of 150 Team Members each. Our State People and Capability team is small but effective with  Business Partners and an Indigenous Employment Advisor, reporting into the State People and Capability Manager. Our extended team includes various specialist State Support roles and National Specialist’s based out of NSW/ACT. This role will also include extensive travel in NSW and ACT store network.

This is a fast-paced role, which will see you involved in everything from basic transactional HR tasks, to complex people issues and strategic business partnering.

Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • End to end investigations
  • Writing, reviewing and providing feedback and coaching
  • Answering general policy, national agreement and payroll queries
  • Recruitment, specifically shortlisting and interviewing for Line Managers and above
  • Providing general HR related advice, support and coaching to Store and Zone Managers
  • Performance management of predominantly Line Managers
  • Facilitation of HR related training and presenting at meetings
  • Providing advice and guidance on complex cases involving injuries and illnesses (predominantly non-work related)
  • Zone talent management and succession planning
  • Implementation of National initiatives, such as performance review processes, talent mapping and engagement surveys
  • Supporting change initiatives
  • Escalation point for Team Member issues and complaints
  • Supporting diversity strategies across stores
  • Contribute to National projects
  • Promoting engagement initiatives and assisting stores to increase team engagement.


 What we are looking for

To be successful in this role a broad range of people skills and HR knowledge is required. Most importantly and the key to your success will be your ability to build strong relationships with Store Managers, State and National support teams and offer a valuable and trusting partnership to your Zone Managers.

Experience and skills that are desirable:

  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high volume environment
  • Ability to adapt and prioritise
  • Pragmatic approach and the ability to problem solve and navigate through the grey to achieve solid decision making
  • Experience managing multiple stakeholders
  • Possess a diverse range of HR knowledge and skills
  • Clear and concise communication
  • Lead by example and demonstrate and live Kmart Values (Live Integrity, Take Care, Customer First, Grow Together and Reach Higher)
  • Capacity to change own style to adapt to needs of multiple stakeholders.

 Qualifications in Human Resources, although highly valued, are not essential as real-life experience in similar roles is also valued highly.
