We have big plans in place to ensure we deliver our vision and significantly expand our business. With another 50 new stores opening across Australia and New Zealand, coupled with the growth of our online business and expansion into new markets, we are on a mission to improve the Kmart shopping experience for all our customers, who are at the heart of everything we do. There has never been a more irresistible time to join Kmart!

Based in our Head Office in Mulgrave, Melbourne an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Womenswear Designer to join our Design team, focusing on designing for Ladies Plus and our seasonal leisure portfolio. This is one of our larger portfolios and will see you quickly become a crucial part of the team, so we are seeking a well-qualified candidate who is capable of jumping in and hitting the ground running in this fast pace environment.

This role covers 3 main areas:

Use your creative flair! As a womenswear designer you will be responsible for designing for Ladies Plus sizes as well as the winter Leisure wear from concept to sign off. You will be required to interpret briefs, produce tech packs, update range pages, colour up the range, create presentations and artwork. Ideally you will have design experience across the all the various women’s categories but we are open to candidates with specialist experience too!

Essential to your design repertoire will be your strong understanding of print and ability to complete finished artwork and amendments. We would love for you to be a print designer but it’s ok if you’re not. Fabric and fit knowledge is a must as is Adobe CS Suite.

You love trends! The role has a strong trend component and given we are a Design led model, your knowledge and opinions will be valued! You will use your expertise to trend forecast key items, details, fabrics and have the ability to present your forecasts to your key stakeholders across merchandise. You will have strong ranging skills and be capable of pulling together a cohesive range

You will bring to the role a strong understanding of range architecture, entry/exit prices, cost prices, profit margins, volume and how to drive category growth and will possess commercial handwriting that fits in with Kmart everyday day low price strategy.

Collaboration is key! Working closely with the Buyer part of your role will include account management which will see you influencing situations and outcomes. You will require strong stakeholder management skills coupled with the ability to manage up and down and will have prior experience partnering with a Buyer. Teamwork is a given as you work in partnership with various departments across the business including our Asia Sourcing team.

Your success in this role will be measured by your ability to ensure speed to market, understanding of market trends and product differentiation from competitors. You will have already made a strong impact in previous roles and your sound background in womenswear design will be integral to your success. You will have a structured approach, be incredibly well organised with strong time management skills, deadline driven and process orientated.

You will benefit from joining an amazing business and a dynamic team who are all committed to the success of Kmart and providing our customers with a great shopping experience. Our values – Think Customer, Take Care, Live Integrity, Grow Together and Reach Higher will resonate with you deeply and you’ll enjoy being part of a growing, iconic Australian business that has a fantastic culture that is non-hierarchical, diverse and inclusive. Your work environment will be highly collaborative, fast-paced and progressive, with no two days the same!

You will be afforded autonomy and accountability in your role and have access to development opportunities across both Kmart and the Wesfarmers Group, excellent remuneration, an uncapped bonus scheme & access to Wesfarmers share plan (both for eligible team members), free parking and benefits program including a discount card for Kmart, Coles, Target and Officeworks.
